How does a portable freezer work?

A portable freezer relies on an outside power source (house or vehicle power supply) to control its internal temperature. Because of this, a portable fridge or freezer doesn't need ice to keep your food and drinks cold like a portable cooler does.

Portable freezers and refrigerators come in a variety of sizes suitable for all kinds of families and groups. Knowing what size best suits your needs will help you choose your freezer. 20 Liters - The smallest average size you’ll find is 20 liters, although there are some portable fridges that are 10.5 liters, and these are excellent for storing medicines including insulin. You can also store a few cans or bottles, but not many, and therefore they are best for personal use. 30 - 35 Liters - These freezers are best suited for one-day trips like fishing, and they also boast enough capacity to keep you refreshed during solo trips. 40 - 45 Liters - Considered the standard size, these are an excellent option for longer (2 - 3 day) camping or road trips and can store both food and drink. 50 Liters - Ideal for small families or longer personal trips, you’ll have enough space for around 4 days worth of food and drink to keep everyone fueled and happy. 60 - 65 Liters - These slightly bigger freezers are fantastic for big adventures with the whole family (and maybe some friends), while they’re also great for keeping drinks cold when throwing a big party during the summer. 80 Liters + - The only option to consider if you’re planning epic cross-country road trips and need a reliable freezing and chilling source. These have extra storage space you can also refill as you go, so there’s no need to pack it full when first heading out.

What is a two-way and three-way portable freezer?

A two-way portable freezer operates much like your freezer at home does, however, they use less energy and typically run on batteries, although they will work with 110/240v outlets, too. Some products also work with solar power, making them better for the environment and cheaper to run. The three-way portable freezer uses batteries, 240v outlets and heat exchange as opposed to compressors. Their main benefit is that they run almost silently, and although they’re not as powerful as compressor-based models, they are more energy efficient and therefore last longer. You cannot run them at an angle, though, so find a solid, stable base to keep them.

How cold does a portable freezer get?

So, this depends on your particular freezer, but most of the best portable freezers get as cold as -4°F to -8°F. Bear in mind that the minimum setting for maintaining food quality is 0°F or -18°C. As for fridges, FDA recommends keeping the temperature at or below 40° F or 4°C.

Again, this depends on your specific freezer. But generally speaking, quality units can last for around 10 to 20 years, depending on the brand, how often you use your freezer, and how well you take care of it. Keep in mind that cheaper models may last shorter.

How much power does a portable freezer use?

Fridges that rely on thermoelectric technology use very little power to stay cool but, as a result, they don't have the ability to get as cold as compressor fridges. The latter drain more electricity but this is also why they're usually much colder than their counterparts. Of course, the better insulated a freezer/fridge is, the longer it will be able to maintain its temperature after you unplug it.
