When was the last time you tied a tool belt to your hip? They’ve become old-school, and if you’ve been thinking the same thing, then it’s time to make an upgrade. Tool vests put the weight of your tools where they’re supposed to be—on your upper body. Nothing hurts your lower lumbar like a 20 lbs. tool belt pulling you down. That, and there’ll be no more pulling your pants up every ten minutes. They’re built better and last longer, so without further ado, let’s showcase the cream of the crop and let you make your decision about the best tool vest for your needs.

The Best Tool Vest

1
Stanley Fatmax Tool Vest

stanley fatmax tool vest

There’s no better tool vest than this one from Stanley, and is that really a surprise? Stanley is one of the top providers of tools and work gear in the country, and they just keep on getting better. They kept functionality in mind while ensuring this tool vest would be as safe as possible, regardless of what condition you’re working in. The extra-wide arm slots allow for great mobility, while the loose-fitting straps give you breathing room around your midsection. For safety, there’s reflective strips that notify vehicles and rechargeable flashlight users of your location, so you won’t even have to announce yourself to stay safe.

Apart from that, Stanley Fatmax Tool Vest is also lightweight. Many companies claim this, but this vest is just over 1.6 lbs., which is about two pounds less than the average tool vest that we’ve come across in our research and testing. It’s difficult to associate an ultralight design with durability because there’s the common misconception that it has to be thicker to have quality. Between the air mesh interior and nylon exterior, it’s built to last through numerous uses. Depositing and withdrawing your tools isn’t going to mess with this vest.

Speaking of where you’ll be putting your tools, this vest includes plenty of compartments for everything you’ll need, from screwdrivers to drill bit sets, for whatever task you’re tackling. It’s going to undergo a lot of stress over the years, which is why Stanley includes a limited lifetime warranty in the purchase. Stanley will cover anything and everything that happens to this.

Holmes MHBLK Workwear Tool Vest

holmes mhblk workwear tool vest

If you need a work vest, there’s no better place to look than Holmes. Your position might be the same, but the job itself changes from contract to contract, and location to location. They had that in mind when they added a removeable tool pouch, giving you the option of loading up even more tools and small materials if needed, but not over encumbering you for smaller tasks that don’t require so many tools.

Made from a blend of polyester and mesh, you get plenty of comfort and an airy feeling in the back panel. That back panel is almost completely lined with mesh, but helps prevent pockets of heat from forming on your back, especially when the sun is beating down on it. The only issue with the usage of mesh in Holmes MHBLK Workwear Tool Vest is that it doesn’t provide the best stability for the pockets, so while they’re fortified, the mesh lining near the pockets (inside the vest) won’t hold up forever.

Holmes wanted safety to be a priority, so they strategically placed reflective strips along the front of this tool vest to give you some peace of mind when working in unsafe or otherwise potentially dangerous situations. You’ll also have a rear hammer loop, as well as belts in the back for adjustments throughout the day. It’s a completely customizable fit.

Other small features include a nickel ring on the front of the vest to hold your tape measure, as quality buckles that should last for years before needing to be replaced. Holmes designed this work vest with a budget-friendly perspective in mind, so you can expect to save big, but just note that it won’t be around forever. On average, you should be able to get 3-5 years of use out of this. For the price, that’s absolutely fantastic, just remember that you will see easily mendable signs of degradation in a few years’ time. Polyester is simple to repair, so grab a patch kit and keep on working.

NoCry Professional Canvas Tool Vest

nocry professional canvas tool vest

There’s budget-friendly, and then there’s help-I-need-something-for-work-right-away. NoCry pushes hard on the latter option with a work tool vest that’s not likely to even cost you your first hour’s wage on the construction site. It’s so impressively priced, we initially didn’t hold much stock in its durability or quality until we had a chance to use it. This is made to last for 2-3 years on average, with some users reporting more than 7 years of total use with proper care.

Canvas isn’t the first material that you’d expect from a work vest, and neither did we. That’s because the NoCry vest can be used for gardening, work, woodworking, or whatever it is that you need. It’s made of 600D canvas, which will surely hold up against scuffs and scrapes. The thing is, with its low cost, production levels are high. Stitches get missed every now and again, so you might end up with one to three frayed ends on your apron.

NoCry made this very easy to adjust. They claim a one-size-fits-all approach, but after about 54” of waist size, it’s going to be snug to say the least. It’s not designed for everyone, but the straps are adjustable and comfortable, so you should be okay even when you need to apply it to the outside of winter gear. Because of the apron-style design, it’s considered an ultralight work vest weighing in at just under 14 oz. You could ball it up and stash it in your tool box if you wanted, and just tie it on when you get to the worksite.

You have sixteen pockets to fill and use as you wish. Some of those are narrow for ratchet screwdrivers or utility knives, so while it’s not the most spacious work vest, it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. The downside is that when this does rip from having too many heavy tools inside, the tear usually spreads pretty far. You can expect it to damage the thing pretty good, so it’s wise to buy a patch kit. If it can’t be patched, then there’s too much structural damage and it will have to be thrown out. Just don’t overstuff it and you’ll be fine.

Dickies Work Gear Padded Suspender Tool Vest

dickies work gear padded suspender tool vest

While it’s not the best tool vest, Dickies holds a very close design to our top pick. This suspender style tool vest will not only completely envelop you, but it’s built out of a durable blend of heavy-duty canvas, not to talk about smaller tools like hex keys or wrenches. It’s breathable for the material, but also the segmented design of tool pouches that hang off of you. There’s seven slots on the right, and three on the left for quick access to whatever you need.

The adjustable waist area is a bit less than we would like, but we recognize that it’s difficult to make a wide area of adjustments in a suspender system. Dickies Work Gear Padded Suspender Tool Vest is harness-ready, but it’s also built with a 2” belt, designed to go along with Dickies pants perfectly. It makes sense, but understanding that not everybody will be buying Dickies pants, a 1.5” (which is the standard) would have been better.

You get a double roller system for buckling, which includes a fully steel buckle that’s built tough. A hook and loop closure keeps everything secure. Some of the low-key but fantastic aspects of this tool vest include the padded belt, which is 5” of cushioning to not only keep you comfortable but also support your lower lumbar. It’s not the most breathable part of it, but a little sweat is nothing to pay for stability and assurance that you aren’t going to injure your back.

The buckles on the back are a tad bit difficult to get out, which isn’t a complaint, but you may need a helping hand to help you out of this once you’ve come down from the harness. Despite being a name brand that we already know, Dickies aimed on the lower side of their pricing model to keep this affordable for the working man and woman. Due to the thick design, you can expect this to last from around five years, to at least a decade with proper care. Tears and abrasions to the fabric are extremely uncommon, so feel free to be a bit rough with it and get the job done at any cost.
