How To Stay Cool On Hot Days
We all look forward to seeing the sun shining, but when summer arrives, we tend to feel overwhelmed by heat. There’s no winning!
Whether you’re preparing for a summer getaway or have struck luck with high temperatures at home, it’s important to stay safe. The blazing sun can leave you feeling very unwell and sunburnt if you’re not aware of its strength, so be sure to take these top tips for staying cool on really hot days into consideration.
You’ll never complain about sweltering weather again!
1. Stay Indoors
We hate to sound like too much of a caring parent, but unfortunately, staying indoors is the number one tip for escaping the summer heat. Of course, we understand that you’ll want to get out and about while the sun is in the sky, but just ensure that you’re spending enough time indoors and away from the rays, too. If your home tends to end up hotter than the outdoors weather, then there are plenty of air con machines available online (for example wall AC units) which will make your home feel cool and fresh again. You’ll finally have an excuse never to leave the house when it’s as cool as your air conditioning unit makes it!
2. Drink Plenty Of Water
We’re back again with the parenting advice – sorry! It doesn’t matter whether you’re prone to sweating or not, the heat can leave you feeling very dehydrated. To stop yourself from overheating and getting unwell from dehydration, remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day. The colder the water, the better; if you’ve got an ice cube dispenser then utilize it like there’s no tomorrow!
As well as drinking plenty of water, feel free to splash it on areas of your body which tend to get hot, too. This will provide you with a quick-relief (… make sure you have an empty bladder, though).
3. Always Carry A Towel
Sadly, we don’t always have the opportunity to head to the beach or the nearest pool on a scorching day. However, luckily, you can give yourself the illusion of doing so by continuing to carry a towel around with you. Hear us out…
If you’ve ever sat there, sweating on a hot day and wishing you could get inside an ice cube, then we’ve got the next best thing for you. Cooling towels are designed to give you a super-cold embrace whenever you need them, and once you are done, you can roll them up and put them away. Cooling towels aren’t just for dogs, and we are so glad that humans can finally benefit from their greatness.
4. Dress Sensibly
This might seem like an obvious one, but there’s so much more to dressing for hot weather than wearing less clothes. While putting on a bathing suit is going to help the situation, it’s not always socially acceptable. So, when you’re choosing your outfit for the day, be sure to avoid any dark colors and thick materials. If you head out in an all-black outfit, you can expect to absorb heat and become a walking radiator – nobody wants that.
Pick out clothes which are thin and lightly colored; like a crème linen shirt, for example.
5. Have A Fan For Every Occasion
Cooling fans are wonderful devices. Handhold fans, giant fans, desk fans, electric fans, DIY fans; there’s something for everyone. On really hot days, you deserve nothing but the best, so be sure to have high-velocity fans circulating a breeze around your rooms. The great thing about cooling fans is that they can be moved around, meaning unlike air conditioning units, you can get a breeze however close to your face as you wish.
Cooling fans don’t have to be restricted to indoors, either! Get hold of a portable cordless fan, and you’ll be able to get a cool breeze no matter where you go. We recommend getting an electronic one so that you don’t have to work up a sweat by, well, fanning about.
6. Keep Away From Hot Meals
If you’re spending time cooking up a hot meal, you’re going to end up trying to survive in sauna-like settings. Eating a hot meal on a boiling hot day is tough work, so to avoid the struggle, stay away from hot meals altogether. There are plenty of recipes online which will help you to create delicious cold meals, so don’t turn your nose up at them until you try them. How about a nice healthy salad? Or, how about a picnic out in the sun with lots of cold appetizers? The possibilities are endless, and you might even end up having a new favorite meal in your recipe book.
7. Prepare For The Night
There’s no doubt that trying to get to sleep is the worst part about hot weather. There’s nothing we want to do more than snuggle up in bed, but the heat stops us from doing so. After hours of tossing and turning, we end up sleeping in far fewer clothes than we began with and panting for air.
To prepare for the hot nights, keep your air con unit running for a few hours before you get into bed. As well as this, try putting your bedsheets in the fridge; this will make them nice and cool.
Be Safe, But Have Fun In The Heat
Although it’s important to consider these top seven tips for staying cool on really hot days, it’s still just as important to have fun. Try out new activities which the weather has been too cold for and get your friends together and enjoy the sun while it lasts. You never know how long you’ve got until a storm comes along, so never treat the sun as though it’s a burden! Some great outdoor activities include heading to the beach, going to a waterpark, hosting a summer party or having a BBQ. Whatever you decide, keep these tips in mind, and you’ll be sure to have the best summer yet.
