A new device conceived by Android (yes, that Android) cofounder Andy Rubin, the Essential Phone is built on some rather lofty principles, namely openness, simplicity, quality, and choice (i.e. absence of bloatware). Its logo-less case, which comes in four colors (black, grey, white, and the aquamarine-like ocean depths) is crafted of titanium and fitted with a ceramic back so it won’t scratch, dent, or bend, even when dropped on its corner onto solid concrete. Moreover it’s got a full edge-to-edge display that hugs the bezel on three sides to outdo even the Galaxy S8 — and to fit that much more comfortably in a single hand. The hardware inside is also top-notch and includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage space, a dual monochrome and color rear camera that produces fantastic imagery even in low light, and an optional 360° camera accessory that clips on magnetically. And more accessories are on their way, amongst them the Essential Phone Dock to which the phone clicks (also magnetically) for a wireless refuelling.
