Boker Solingen’s new full-size Plus tac pen packs a surprise. At one end, it’s an unassuming ballpoint pen. But at the other, it’s a 1.6-inch OTF automatic blade. It’s an ingenious multitool adaptation for everyday office tasks. In a pinch, the Plus could even come in handy as a tactical item.

The tool is set to release on July 23. We’ve circled the date on our calendar — our team routinely handles office tasks on one hand and dirty work on the other. Here’s our first pass at the Boker Plus.

Tac Pen Stats and EDC Utility

The Boker Plus tac pen cuts a significant profile in length and weight. The black aluminum case is 7 inches long, and the unit weighs 1.3 ounces. For context, the Pilot V7’s I usually use weigh 0.3  ounces. You won’t want to carry this baby in your shirt pocket unless you have a serious pocket protector.

Instead, we recommend clipping it inside your pants pocket. In some ways, that’s where it belongs — it is part pocket knife.

There’s a lot of utility in keeping it within reach. Say you’re switching between endorsing checks and opening packages. (If you are, can you let us know what you do?) In that case, a quick EDC blade can be as handy as a ballpoint nib. The short D2 blade should offer plenty of control and edge retention for repeated use. For size comparison, 1.6 inches is close to the exact edge length of a blade on a Swiss Army keychain knife.

Tactical Pen Capability

Let’s say your day takes you beyond opening boxes and endorsing checks (shame, right?). The Boker Plus tac pen belongs in the great outdoors, too. Getting wet is no issue for ballpoint nibs; wipe them on your pant leg, and they’ll be good as new. And while short, the D2 blade’s toughness and edge retention should give it wide utility.

The blade looks to be relevant for tactical scenarios, too. It looks easy to deploy with the clip, and your hand should stay put between that and the groove in the middle of the shaft. It’s unclear whether the OTF action is single-action (user replaces) or double-action (button replaces).

When discretion is the priority, a screw-on cap hides the blade — or prevents debris from getting in.

Availability, Pricing, Verdict

The Boker Plus OTF tactical pen is a cool take on the multitool and promises utile EDC capability. The pen will release on July 23, 2021, at an MSRP of $107. It is laser engravable for an additional $24. Simply proceed through checkout from the Plus’s product page to order.
