Computer DIYers and hobbyists will love the all-new Raspberry Pi platform. The credit card-sized Pi 4 Model B comes with more computing power and wireless connectivity to further enhance its computer-building potential. It may be small but the Model B packs an awesome punch.
At the core of the Model B is an ARM Cortex A72 64-bit quad-core CPU that runs on the 1.5 GHz scale. It provides more than enough computing power for various applications. Mated to the quad-core is 4 GB of SDRAM LPDDR4, although it also comes in 1 and 2 GB versions. Although they’re a far cry from the 8 to 16 GB memory modules found in conventional desktop PCs, the Model B is never a sissy. It is sufficient to guarantee fast computer operations without the worry of lags.
Providing the framework for the computer is Raspberry Pi 4’s proprietary board. It comes complete with Bluetooth 5.0 low-energy functionality that complements its onboard 802.22 b/g/n/ac dual-band wireless LAN. There’s a true Gigabit Ethernet port, too. The improved system allows for better connectivity via different platforms. This can have substantial implications on the computer’s versatility.
Powering the Model B is USB-C technology running at 5 volts. Raspberry also integrated PoE capability in the Model B, creating a separate HAT for the PoE. There are two MIPI ports for the display and camera systems. It also boasts of a pair of micro HDMI ports that support 4K video. Raspberry also extended its GPIO header, which now comes with 40 pins. Of course, what’s a computer system without USB ports? Hence, Raspberry added a pair each of USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports.
There is no doubt about the performance of the new Pi 4 Model B computer. It is as small as your credit card but it can outperform some standard-sized desktop PCs.
