Yak Grills: The Ultimate Charcoal Hibachi Grill
Grilling is great, but it often relegates the chef to far off territory. The grill master is banished behind a monolithic hulk of steel, while the rest of the party hangs out around the outdoor table. YAK Grills founder David Sypniewski decided to do something about it. After a trip to Japan, where he discovered the pleasures of small-scale grilling, the entrepreneur launched a new company, YAK Grills, to bring his new-found passion to the masses.
Grilling Made Personal
The YAK Grill is a small, charcoal powered, tabletop-friendly grill with enough space to fit four burgers and the heat to sear a steak in minutes.
When we say “tabletop-friendly,” we mean it. At an ambient air temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and with the grill cranked up to its maximum heat (an astonishing 700+ degrees), the underside remains a cool 85 degrees. At 15 pounds, you can take it anywhere – cookouts, tailgate parties, the beach – you name it.
The tabletop-safe feature is a product of intelligent construction meant to maximize airflow (that’s also why the grill can reach such high temperatures). Rust-resistant stainless steel is durable and dishwasher safe. Made without any plastic components, the YAK Grill promises to withstand the test of time. Just in case it doesn’t, each grill comes with a five-year warranty.
Portable and Productive
The YAK Grill has a 7 x 15-inch cooking surface, which is large enough to feed two to six people, depending on what you are cooking (it can hold about 12 hotdogs). The airflow system has a fixed passage, unlike the larger high-end charcoal grills, so you’ll have to manage temperature the old fashioned way – with time and fuel. The upshot is you don’t have to have your hands near the hot grill to adjust any settings.
The YAK Grill comes with a handle, removable grate, skewers, charcoal grid, housing body, and burning chamber, all wrapped in a sturdy zippered carrying case. If you get in on the Indegogo campaign, you can snag one for $169.00.
We love the YAK Grill’s no-assembly-required design and minimal packaging and appreciate its chef-tested pedigree. But our favorite feature has to be the built-in skewer notches, located under the removable grate. The grill ships with 12 reusable steel skewers, so order up some shrimp, prep some kabobs, and get to cooking.
