The Pod Pro Mattress – Sleep It Off
Mattress toppers may be an easy and cheap way to up-level your sleeping experience, but they are more of a gateway drug for the real thing. If you really want to mainline the good stuff, you’ve got to start with a mattress designed to keep you comfortable and cool. If you’re going to take it a step further, you should consider some sort of sleep tracking to ensure that what you thought was a great sleep truly was. Enter: the Pod Pro by Eight Sleep.
Eight Sleep is a relatively new company to the sleep business, but they are well known for innovation. Eight Sleep’s original Pod debuted in 2019 as an all-foam mattress with advanced cooling technology. The new Pod Pro is a step forward in their design, but since this sleep accessory comes with a heavy price tag, let’s see if this high-tech sleep solution is right for you.
The Pod Pro’s sensor technology is in the cover — Eight Sleep calls this their “Active Grid” — and integrated into this first inch of the cushion are narrow water tubes that regulate temperature. Through these tubes, hot and cold water is cycled based on a setting that the user selects on their smartphone. Additionally, this layer integrates biometric sensors to keep an eye on the sleeper’s quality of rest.
Below the Active Grid layer, Eight Sleep has selected a 2-inch layer of AirFlow polyfoam, followed by a 1-inch layer of memory foam. Below these layers, you’ll find a 4-inch layer of dense polyfoam that makes up the base and gives the bed rigidity. Many reviewers find the blend of foam suitable for small-to-midsize sleepers who don’t move around too much. If you’re on the larger end of the spectrum, this mattress might be a bit too soft for you unless you’re a side sleeper.
The Hub is the Pod Pros secret weapon, a tiny reservoir that rests on the floor and connects to the Active Grid to keep water pumping at a consistent temperature. Both sleepers can independently set their preferred climate, ranging from 55 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit.
App and Pricing
It wouldn’t be a modern piece of technology without an app to connect to, would it? The Pod Pro app offers advanced data to track an extensive range of sleeping factors. The app tracks your waking and sleeping hours, light and deep sleeping cycles, and how often you’re changing positions. All of this data is useful, especially if you’re using it to modify your behavior to drive better sleeping habits.
At $2,845 for a queen, this isn’t a cheap mattress, but think about how much time you spend sleeping. All of the amazing health benefits of a great night’s sleep will be evident fairly quickly, and if you opt for their financing plan, you could be dishing out only $80 a month (on approved credit) you’ll probably lose a little less sleep upfront.
