Makerbot Digitizer

Sure, 3D printers (like Makerbot’s Replicator 2) magically transform digital designs into real life objects, but our concern is more with actually creating those files. Makerbot’s Digitizer makes this a little easier, at least if you intend on replicating existing objects. This tabletop device uses two eye-safe lasers, a 1.3 megapixel camera and a turntable to scan objects up to 8″ in diameter and 8″ in height, taking just a few minutes to recreate them, down to a 0.5mm resolution, in one of several 3D file formats. When you’re done, scale sizes, sculpt your model, and add parts (like a top hat to that gnome) easily using Makerbot’s MakerWare software – no CAD skills required.
