Create The Perfect Home Yoga Studio

There’s a certain element of calm that washes over you when you enter a professional yoga studio. Before you even begin your workout, your body has relaxed, your senses have heightened, and you’ve left your worries at the door. You don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home to achieve this bliss, however, you can attain it by creating your own “at home” yoga studio.

Creating the perfect space where you can work your way to better physical and mental health doesn’t have to be difficult. With a small budget, some dedication, and some handy tips, you can turn your spare bedroom into your very own yoga studio in no time.

To attain the perfect environment, see our 5 key steps to implement when designing your home studio:

1. Start By De-Cluttering

A yoga studio requires space. You need room for your yoga mats to roll out and you need to be able to do your asanas without bumping into furniture or knocking ornaments over. This means that decluttering is essential. Remove everything from the room that doesn’t add to the peace and tranquillity. If an item is not functional to the room’s purpose, it needs to go! Ironically, decluttering and organizing a room is meditative in itself and is the first step towards creating a space that’s blissfully yours.

Yoga studios are generally very minimalistic and a less cluttered room means there are fewer distractions. This allows you to focus on your poses and your breathing as you enter a mode of total relaxation.

2. Paint The Walls Using Calm Colors

Bright orange walls with purple trimming might fit the scene for a bohemian-inspired bedroom, but they are definitely not the colors to go for if its peace and tranquillity you’re after. Loud colors have a way of demanding attention, which could distract you from focusing on your asanas. This is why you should instead opt for calming neutral tones that complement the serene atmosphere.

Cooler tones or warm whites are the preferred choices for yoga studios. They will help to make the room look and feel bigger and they will also recede rather than demand your full attention.

3. Set The Mood With Music And Lighting

Once you’ve declutterd, painted your walls, and polished your floors, then it’s time to create the desired atmosphere. We suggest that you start with the light and then add a touch of meditative music. If you have a room with windows that let in plenty of natural light, then great! You can accentuate this with lightweight neutral-toned drapes.

If the room lets in very little daylight, don’t despair. You can mimic the setting with dimmer switches and overhead lights that are set to a low-med setting. Place speakers in two corners of the room and add relaxing music to your playlist. There are plenty of places online where you can purchase music that has been created specifically for meditation.

4. It’s All About Scent

Never underestimate the sense of smell. While yoga pants might hold your body in delightful comfort, the right smells can wrap your brain in a similar repose. Beautiful scents set the mode for the ultimate relaxation and offer “feel good” sensations. Of course, natural is better.

You can add scented floral arrangements to your room, burn some incense and scented candles, or you could treat yourself to some aromatic essential oils. You can diffuse these oils to evoke an energy that flows through the room and invigorates you as you inhale and exhale with each asana. Some of the best essential oils for yoga include Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Lavender, Lemongrass, and Peppermint.

5. Accentuate With The Right Décor

While our first tip directs you to eliminate clutter, there’s always room for a few favoured ornaments that spark a sense of joy. From plants and crystals to ceramic buddhas and mandala wall prints, it’s perfectly OK to subtly decorate with yoga-inspired pieces.

Pinterest is a great place to draw décor inspiration from. You can also visit some more prominent yoga studios in your area and get some ideas that you think will work in your very own yoga room. This is your own space and just like every other room in your home reflects bits of your personality, so too should the room where you relax, exercise, and find that perfect state of bliss.

Once you’ve decluttered, given your walls a fresh coat of paint, and decorated your room with all it’s fitting finishing touches, it’s time to gear up with a soothing pair of yoga shorts and roll your mat out so that you can enter your asanas in your very own space – your “at home” yoga studio.
