Super Fun Lawn Games
There is something about warm weather and light clothing that makes people want to gather around and let out their inner child. It’s quite natural to have fun with a group of friends, play some outdoor games then perhaps end the evening with a BBQ. In the case that you are looking for some more games to add to your summertime routine (and perhaps stop it from being so ‘routine’) then here’s not one, but fifteen fun lawn games to play this summer that will have you and your friends/family making some pleasant memories.
1. Badminton
It certainly qualifies to be referred to as an oldie but a goodie, people have probably been playing badminton casually longer than anyone can remember. What makes it such a natural choice it the fact that regardless of their skill level anyone can indulge in and enjoy this game. It does tend to get a bit competitive at times, but a little heightened drama here and there makes for some harmless fun.
2. Blow Up Chains
This next game is for those lovers team games. To play this game, two teams face each other and each form a long chain. Always alternating, a group member tries to start and break the opposing chain. If they succeed, then one of the opponents (one of them must have let go, in case of doubt always the right one) must come along as “prisoner” and integrate himself into the opposite chain. If it does not succeed, then the group member must integrate with the opposing team.
3. The Pocket Shot
It started out as a pretty viable weapon, but now against guns and knives, the slingshot has been given the position of one of the most fun toys out there. With the pocket shot, you can get double the amount of fun while you line up cans and shoot at them. It shoots at double the rate that a conventional slingshot does and is quite portable, the fact that it easily fits in your pocket literally earned it its name.
4. Jarts Lawn Darts
For a more kid-friendly option, you should check out this watered down, yet fun version of playing horseshoes. It shares the same core concept of hitting a target and involves two yellow target rings placed at different distances. Each team simply takes turns throwing their colored darts at the target rings. You can keep score, or altogether throw that concept out the window. An added plus is the fact that the tips of the darts are made of rounded rubber, so, no one will get hurt in the course of playing this game.
5. Washers
This is one of those games that may seem quite simple but, in its case, simplicity is a winning factor. It involves the rather rudimentary act of hurling objects with the aim of them landing on another object. Do not underestimate the amount of fun that can be derived from this, especially when surrounded with friends and family while the conversation is flowing. Besides the fact that it is fun and simple, this game is also extremely compact and easy to set up, so you can have it with you on trips or simply set it up on your lawn.
6. Kubb
Another exciting game that may not necessarily sound that way on paper is Kubb. It is quite simple and somewhat rudimentary and involves throwing sticks as well as blocks with the aim of knocking them over. Here it sounds simple but out in the yard, the tension gets high and the struggle to knock down the king can easily make or break a player. All in all, it is very stimulating.
7. MegaChess Giant Chess Set
Forget Wizards chess with its violent tendencies and set up a giant chess set right in your yard to entertain your friends and family. Of course, you would need to have a number of people over to make this happen, but is it really summer if you do not throw some yard parties now and then? As fun as this is, you have to be sure that your lawn is ready for it, and if it is that is a checkmate moment right there.
8. Combo Croquet
From the pages of Alice in Wonderland to your very own yard, this game can yield a lot of fun even though you do not get to play it with flamingos. Be rest assured that it will prove to be quite engaging, with all the strategic maneuvering and positioning involved. Whether you use it for a midsummer theme party or just to have plain old fun with the gang, you are sure to have the time of your laugh.
9. Oversized Memory Game
Stimulating your brain can prove to be both fun and engaging altogether, this life-size version of a classic game could be all you need to keep both kids and adults entertained this summer. What you need to do is to take at least ten pieces of paper then draw matching numbers, pictures or symbols on each half. After cutting them down the middle, you can proceed to place them face down in your yard and then guess which pieces the matching ones are.
10. Yard Twister
Whether it is for the young, the old, or the young at heart, the game of Twister is a fun way to crank up the heat in a good way. You have the creative liberty here to make your twister as large or small as you want. When that choice is made, proceed to spray paint the circles onto the grass, then you can get all tangled up with your friends and family till its time to mow the lawn.
11. Yard Bowling
Everyone loves bowling, it is a commonly unspoken universal truth. It is fun, light and brings people together as swiftly as can be. For this DIY version, you simply need to slather some paint on some old bottles, then use an appropriately sized ball to knock them over. 12. Water Balloon Piñata
Now this one definitely has summer written all over it, this game offers the combo of a great way to have fun and also cool off when the day gets a bit too heated. This easy to prep game requires you to fill balloons with water and hang them up. Then you get to break them and let all that cool water out while you remain blindfolded. You can even add a competitive element by setting a timer to see who gets more balloons broken within a certain period of time.
13. Cornhole
Once again, the fun can be found in the simplicity of this game, the fact that it is a party favorite speaks volumes. It involves the use of two boards which are covered with non-skid fabric and eight bean bags in total. Also, known as the bean bag toss, this game is just what you need for some good old summer fun with friends and family alike.
14. Kan Jam
It’s a simple game for the light at heart and is commonly seen being played on beaches, but there is probably some version that could be fitted into your yard. It involves the use of frisbees and trash cans. The frisbees are hit against the trashcans and though it may cause quite the ruckus, it is a great game for when you want to get on your feet without moving around too much.
15. Capture The Flag
Talk about being in a live action movie and having unlimited fun while doing it. This game has a number of versions, but it basically involves the hiding colored flags, then crossing over into the enemy’s territory to steal their flag and get it back safely across the ‘border’ without getting tagged in the process. It is loads of fun and can be played by people of all age groups.
