Aside from its ever so slightly over the top video, Voltmaker actually makes a lot of sense. Born from the need to charge dead gadgets on the go, Voltmaker packs a 2,000 mAh battery that’s good for fully refuelling any USB-charged smartphone in no time, and sports a backup generator – activated by spinning (and not cranking) the ratchet – in the event that its own power source is depleted. While spinning to fully recharge a smartphone is unrealistic (spin time is roughly 1:1 with talk time and would take a couple of hours to fully charge a device), Voltmaker handily covers potential emergency calls, and works with an optional flashlight plug-in module that runs for 20 mins on a two-minute spin session.

Find it at IndieGoGo – $70 to $90 (with flashlight)
