If you’ve ever wanted to slip the surly bonds of earth and dance the sky on laughter-silvered wings all while keeping your easy rider mojo, now you can. Hammacher Schlemmer has introduced to its pages an amazing feat of engineering, the Helicycle. A 230 hp four-cylinder engine powers it to 112 mph on the road or in the air. In street mode, it can accelerate from 0-60 in under 8 seconds, and it has a proprietary tilting system that give it the agility of a motorcycle. Alternately, take to the skies by transforming it from road machine to flight-ready in 10 minutes. Contrary to its namesake, the Helicycle isn’t a helicopter and doesn’t fly as one: the main rotor provides lift, while the forward motion of the vehicle comes from the rear mounted prop. Thanks to its design, it can’t stall, and in the event of an engine failure it can land safely. Designed to cruise at low altitudes (4000′) and needing just over 500′ of runway to takeoff, and only 100′ for landings, Helicycle’s 27 gallon gas tank give it a 220 mile range in the air, or 750 on the road. All you need to fly it is a sport pilot license, a longing for adventure, and chaps (your call on that last one).
